FRIED TOASTIES
vegetarian & really easy to make
For those of you who don’t have access to a sandwich toaster, a decent non-stick frying pan is all you need to make crispy, golden sandwiches.
Serves 1
- knob of butter
- 2 slices of bread
- 60g (2 oz) grated cheese
- 1 tomato, sliced
- seasoning
Method
- Butter the bread and make up a sandwich with the butter on the outside.
- Heat a non-stick frying pan. Carefully place the sandwich in the pan. Cook for about 3 minutes, pressing down gently with a fish slice until golden brown underneath. Carefully, turn and cook other side.
TOASTY FILLINGS
Any sort of cheese that melts can make a great toasty filling. Try melting with any of the following:
- Wholegrain mustard
- Wafer thin ham
- Red onion
- Spring onions
- Chives
- Piccalilli
- Warm baked beans or spaghetti hoops
- Chopped garlic and a couple of torn basil leaves
- Olive paste
- Mayonnaise
- Hot salsa (see our recipe)
- Scrambled eggs and a little horseradish sauce
- Roasted sweet potato and aubergine salad (link)
- Diced avocado
- Tomato and mayonnaise
- Spanish tortilla (see our recipe)
- Macaroni cheese (see our recipe)
- Fried bacon and maple syrup.
